Professor G. Ian Taylor, A.O. – Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

Professor G. Ian Taylor, A.O. is one of our most distinguished Australian Plastic Surgeons, with a world-wide reputation.

He qualified M.B.B.S. at Melbourne University in 1963 and pursued his surgical training at The Royal Melbourne Hospital, achieving his Fellowship in General Surgery in 1968. His specialisation in Plastic Surgery took him to the United Kingdom, where he spent two years at the renowned Frenchay Hospital in Bristol. He returned to Australia to the Royal Melbourne Hospital, serving ten years as Head of the Plastic Surgery Unit.

His anatomical research began at the time he returned from Britain, initially with studies on the groin flap, which he and Roland Daniel successfully transferred as the world’s first successful free flap in 1973.

Ian has had a passion for research ever since and has tied this in with his busy clinical life. His CV is a most impressive document and his achievements are too numerous to list. He has been recognised and awarded membership of nearly every Plastic Surgery society, including the United States, Japan, China, France, United Kingdom, Austria, Germany and Canada. He has been awarded honorary fellowships of the British, Irish, Edinburgh, Canadian and American surgical colleges and an M.D. from Bordeaux in France.

He has been a frequent keynote lecturer in both the United States and Britain and on four separate occasions he has received the Barrett Brown Award. This is presented by the American Association of Plastic Surgeons, for the paper judged to be the most outstanding publication in the Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Plastic Surgery in the previous year. He has won their A.S.P.R.S. International Scholarship Contest eight times.

In 1981 he was a Hunterian Professor and won the Mowlem award of the B.A.P.S in 1986. In 1993 he was the Sir Arthur Sims Commonwealth Travelling Professor and in the same year received The Sir Ian Clunies Ross National Science and Technology Award.

In 1997 he was admitted as an Honorary Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, one of only five living Plastic Surgeons to be so honoured. In 1999 he was elected President of the I.P.R.A.S., was made an Honorary Professor of The University of Melbourne and in the same year was made an Officer in The General Division of The Order of Australia (A.O.) “for service to medicine in the field of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the transfer of living bone grafts by utilizing micro-vascular techniques.”

Ian Taylor’s contribution to surgery has been in identifying the vascular anatomy of the body, so that it is possible to transfer tissues, utilising the appropriate vascular life lines. It has been said that he is to vascular surgery what global positioning is to navigation.

In spite of his enormous research and clinical load, he still finds time for his passion of fly fishing, family and friends. Ian Taylor’s contributions have greatly enhanced surgery, both in his country and worldwide and added to the high regard of Australian surgery.

Ian retired from private practice in December 2007.
